But under the radar is a quieter, insidious drain on corporate coffers: payroll fraud. Of its many varieties, the most subtle and pernicious is the fabrication of &#8220;ghost employees.&#8221;<\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: var(--wp--preset--color--background); font-weight: var(--wp--custom--typography--font-weight--normal);\">A ghost employee is not a spooky apparition haunting the halls of offices. Rather, it&#8217;s a phrase that has no life outside of the payroll\u2014a fictional name, an old employee still being &#8220;paid,&#8221; or even a double entry faked by an insider within the firm. And as much as the figures involved might seem paltry taken singly, the aggregate impact is overwhelming.
